Dear LRI supporters and friends,

Due to changes brought about by the recent federation of Regis College and St. Michael’s Faculty of Theology, Dr. Jonathan Bernier will no longer serve as Director of the LRI as of August 31, 2023.  We wish Dr. Bernier all the best as he continues his teaching responsibilities at Regis College.

We are grateful to Dr. Bernier and previous chair, Prof. Reid Locklin, for shepherding the LRI in its visioning process over the past few years.  This renewed vision for the LRI is the blueprint for exciting and promising developments in the future.

In the interim, temporary oversight of the LRI will be undertaken by the Board.   Any questions or queries can be addressed to me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Prof. Darren Dias, OP

Chair, Lonergan Research Institute Board of Directors

Our Mission

The mission of the Lonergan Research Institute is to preserve, promote, develop and implement the achievement of Bernard Lonergan, S.J. An apostolate of the Jesuits in English Canada, we pursue our mission in collaboration with a global network of Lonergan centres and scholars, and in partnership with Regis College, the Jesuit faculty of theology at the University of Toronto.

About Bernard Lonergan

Bernard Joseph Francis Lonergan, SJ (17 December 1904 – 26 November 1984) was a Canadian Jesuit priest best known for his original contributions to philosophy and theological method. Programs

In addition to its essential activities of archival preservation and the production of Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan, the Institute conducts various activities and programs of special interest to students, scholars, and the wider community.

Courses

Although there is no formal Lonergan studies program at Regis College, there is a recommended body of courses for students interested in focusing on Lonergan.

Crowe Bursary

The purpose of the Bursary is to encourage Lonergan studies on the part of younger scholars. The Bursary will be awarded to the proposal that best promises to advance Lonergan studies.

Research Assistantships

The Assistantships, in the amount of $6,000, renewable for each of up to four years, are awarded to outstanding doctoral students at Regis College or in allied programs at the Toronto School of Theology and the University of Toronto. Assistantships may also be available for post-doctoral students

How You Can Support Us

The Institute depends on its funding on the goodness of our benefactors, a significant subsidy from the Jesuits in English Canada, royalties, and book sales. The Institute also benefits from its partnership with Regis College, the Jesuit school of theology at the University of Toronto. Publication of the Collected Works and the Audio Digitization Project are generously supported by the Malliner Charitable Foundation. Graduate Research Assistantships are funded by a grant from the Denson Family Foundation and other partners.
